Wow. Focus on the road, Potter has become my most read fic on AO3 and has reached over 1000 hits in the space of 1 week. Thank you to everyone who read it, reviewed, reblogged, followed, subscribed; I am really baffled by the amount of feedback on this one-shot. Here are some unsolicited thoughts:
It seems clear to me that E-rated stuff attracts people a lot more than other ratings and I find that extremely funny. (Though let’s be honest, this one-shot was incredibly tame compared to what is usually floating around in the E tag)
Writing smut is challenging but fun. Kudos to the authors who have smut in most of their fics. I wrote a couple of very mild scenes for Epitaph but none of them were particularly descriptive, unlike Focus. (Where are their hands? *scrolls back up 25 times* What terms should I use? How do I describe body parts without cringing and shutting my laptop? etc etc)
I LOVED writing the build-up to the sex, more so than the sex itself. I don’t know what that says about me. But joke aside, the goal was to depict an intimate and honest and realistic relationship, with a build-up and banter and foreplay and inside jokes and all the things that make intimacy interesting to write (and interesting to experience, if I may add). And then yeah, I guess some of it was hot, but that’s what sex is supposed to be.
People are so kind??? The darlings on Discord and our convos on privacy charms, especially rockstar @pebblysand who went “yeah why wouldn’t you post it” and then seeing as I had no real answer I ended up posting it, lol. I just think readers have been so positive and I love it.
So all in all, this was fun! Don’t know if I’ll dedicate a full one-shot to smut again anytime in the future but this experience made me more confident with my writing for sure.
The last train out of Newcastle was almost empty. It rattled across the large bridges over the black water of the Tyne, and for the most part was quiet, just one or two people per carriage, snoozing in their seats or tapping away on laptops, ignoring the ping of the intercom and the Geordie-accented voice announcing the stops.
The exception to this was the very last carriage, where a large family was making a lot of noise indeed. Dressed head to toe in green and draped in scarves and flags and badges with words like 'Harpies rangers!' and 'These witches have talons!', they stretched across two table seats and the aisles behind too, the tables themselves laden with drinks and tubs of food bought last minute from the M&S in the station.
Actually most of words we use for sex are violent, not just fuck. My Marriage and Family professor pointed this out during my freshmen year of college and it’s stayed with me. Think about it…. bang, screw, hit it, pound, smash, rail, plow, pound, like our entire culture has tried to remove the concept of intimacy and vulnerability and emotion from sex by associating violent words with the action. The power of language on culture, perspective, and overall mindset is so incredible. We gotta be more careful and respectful of that.
Interestingly enough, the one term I can think of that isn’t violent, make love, is ridiculed in pop culture instead of used to create intimacy when talking about sex. I never considered that before. This whole post is food for thought.
Reblogging again for ^^this comment. I’d been thinking the same thing. You can say you had sex or fucked or banged but if you say you “made love” then you’re mocked as a naive, overly-romantic, teenage girl virgin or some other sexist bullshit.
I wonder what euphemisms are in other languages. I only know a few, but not well enough to write about them.
and to your left you will see an abuser realizing that his victim might be the last hope he has. you also see a pure, good boy who has limitless compassion contemplate if he does have a limit:
i need to preface this by saying i love remus. i love him as a person, as a character, i’m down for it. and i love remus and harry’s relationship and i think remus was wildly important to harry, offering him more tools to help himself than any other teacher. so what i’m saying IS OUT OF LOVE.
by the time remus shows up offering to help, he has repeatedly let harry down. harry’s disappointed that remus doesn’t write him after sirius dies ( and for harry to be disappointed in the actions of others towards him, that says something ). he has repeatedly shown harry that he wants to keep him at arm’s length ( the reasons behind this are probably due to remus’ insecurities / fears but i don’t write remus so i’m not going to dive too much into it ).
harry recognizes this. i think, on some level, he relates very easily to remus. but i think, at the point he’s at in his own journey, he is beginning to see his heroes for what they really are. – remus shows up under the guise of finally stepping up into harry’s life, but harry quickly realizes it’s only because he doesn’t think he’s worthy of being a father or a husband.
so it makes him angry. and remus evoking james’ memory makes him even angrier. one of the few things harry took on the run was the photographs hagrid gave him, he is reminded constantly of the sacrifice his parents made for him. it’s one of the few times harry refuses to let himself be manipulated by someone who knew james better than he ever could. because he’s closer to james than he ever was.
harry sacrificed his relationship with ginny, his chance at personal happiness because of the greater good. because he understands that his personal needs are insignificant compared to what was at stake, but he values bravery highly. remus came to him out of fear. remus also showed disregard to something harry values above all else, family.
harry understands that he needs to make remus angry in order to make him leave, he realizes he might need burn a bridge to make remus feel like harry’s not an escape route, so he does what he needs to do, a reoccurring theme. because there is somewhere remus should be, and it’s not with him. still, he speaks out of anger towards someone he feels ought to know better, acting below himself.
At the last word there was a peculiar grinding noise from above. All of them looked upward in time to see the crystal chandelier tremble; then, with a creak and an ominous jingling, it began to fall. Bellatrix was directly beneath it; dropping Hermione, she threw herself aside with a scream. The chandelier crashed to the floor in an explosion of crystal and chains, falling on top of Hermione and the goblin, who still clutched the sword of Gryffindor. Glittering shards of crystal flew in all directions; Draco doubled over, his hands covering his bloody face. As Ron ran to pull Hermione out of the wreckage, Harry took the chance: He leapt over an armchair and wrested the three wands from Draco’s grip, pointed all of them at Greyback, and yelled, “Stupefy!”
-(Harry potter and the Deathly Hallows)
This passage summarized Harry, Draco and Ron perfectly.
1. Harry will always go for the greater good. He will always try to save EVERYONE over a particular person.
2. Draco will always try to save himself 1st.
3. Ron will do ANYTHING to keep Hermione out of harm's way. At any cost.
I am blown away by the support on yesterday’s one-shot! Truly was not expecting this much positive feedback when I woke up today. I will get back to everyone’s messages either tonight or most likely Saturday! Take care everyone. - whizz
